Sciatica, Schmiattica

It’s been a hot minute since I came to the blog. I could give a million “reasons,” but let me just say the following:

LIFE.

Yup. That is it! With as crazy as things have been, I am still hitting the mat and I am becoming increasingly more unapologetic about it. It is what makes it possible for me to not loose my crap on a daily basis, so we all want me doing yoga, right? While all the yoga makes things happen, I am a realist. I am 45 and I get tired. I am a little “fluffy” and maybe sometimes, I get a little achy.

I certainly was this morning. The evil forces were against me arriving on time, but I did make it through the door with enough time to kick off my shoes, drop my purse, and head in to grab a mat at exactly 9am! I know, you are high fiving me right now, and I appreciate that about you. Imagine my surprise when Ginger said, “Today, we will be working on a kriya for sciatica.” Yes, please!

So what does that mean to the average person? Kriyas are sets of postures, poses, movements, and sounds performed in specific orders as prescriptions for an ailment of any kind (body, mind, emotional, you name it). This particular kriya was longer than most I have done before, but Ginger was there to coach us and offer adaptations for those of us who needed them (I did, remember, I have that Achilles that is still healing). I needed that accountability, too. Thanks, by the way, Ginger!

So, if your lower back has been snarly with you and you want to calm it down, I cannot say enough about this kriya. You will want to give yourself a little extra time and a little extra room as there is a good amount of motion and have a few things on-hand like a bolster, a blanket, a weighted bag, a block, and of course, your mat and a timer. Make sure you read through the kriya before you get started to ensure you have everything you need, then just jump right in! I finished it this morning, before 11:00 am and I am still feeling pretty peppy. I hope you find the same benefit.

The link or the kriya is below, so feel free to click on the link and you will find the exact handout we received in class.
